An advanced practice and pedagogy workshop for

  • Directors

  • Choreographers

  • Performance-makers

  • Coaches for acting, movement, voice, & dance

  • Educators & Leaders of physical-based practices

A 10-day immersive workshop focused on integration and inclusion to respond to a critical question: how do we lead, inspire, and create during a time of crisis and revolution?

The artists of Convergences Theatre Collective have responded to this question by integrating various artistic, educational, and contemplative practices into our performer training as well as creative process in developing new theatrical work.  We believe that “advanced practice” is the continual return to fundamentals through the lens of inclusion; a weaving together of unique, individual pieces to collectively create a powerful vision of performance for artists, audiences, and communities today. Workshop participants will take away concrete ways to navigate these important questions and issues within rehearsal, classroom, and performance settings. The workshop will include three main components: Studio Practices, Pedagogy Labs & Cultural Exchange.

Each morning the workshop will begin with contemplative practices as a group. Throughout the day various studio practices will be shared and explored to experience the fundamentals of performance: Presence, Image & Action.

Studio practices include:

  • Physical Acting

  • The Viewpoints

  • Contemplative Dance Practice

  • Developmental Movement & Experiential Anatomy

**Workshop participants are not required to be a practitioner of all studio practices. Instruction will be provided for a wide range of participant experience.

Pedagogy sessions will be interactive and will include workshop participants’ experiences, questions, and concerns. Participants’ experiences and questions will help the instructors shape the flow of learning moving between various formats including practical case studies, facilitated discussions, peer symposium, and presentations.

Current questions and topics that will shape the Pedagogy Labs:

  • Inclusivity

  • Decolonization

  • Cultural Relevance & Specificity

  • Power Dynamics & Systems of Oppression

  • Intimacy

  • Empathy

Participants will have hands-on, immersive experiences with the cultural and artistic practices and expressions of Oaxaca. Tours, artist workshop visits, and learning exchange will be included in the workshop. Oaxaca’s arts and cultural expressions are considered the “heart” of Mexico. Oaxaca is a Colonial city in the Central Valley of the Sierra Mountains in southern Mexico. It is a region rich in diverse cultural and artistic expressions including contemporary, traditional, and pre-Hispanic. Artists and artisans of Oaxaca work with a fusion of time that is expressed in the cuisine, visual arts, performances, and parties in the streets. Workshop participants will meet and work with local artists and artisans who work with various production techniques to create a complexity of experience in the audience/viewer that is unlike any other. All workshop sessions will be lead in English. Translators will be provided for guest artists. Cultural experiences will be lead in Spanish with translation to English.
